Orthodontics: Treatment options
Removable braces
These can perform simple tooth movements and can be used either alone or to simplify the subsequent fixed brace treatment. Generally they consist of an acrylic plate with delicate wires, screws or springs attached to move the teeth. Most removable braces require full-time wear with removal for tooth brushing and sports only.
Functional appliances
Functional appliances are removable braces which act both to correct the position of the teeth and to harness the growth of the jaws in order to improve the relationship between the upper and lower teeth. They most often consist of an upper and lower paired set of removable braces, which require full-time wear with the exception of cleaning, sports and eating. Occasionally they are used as stand-alone treatments, but are more commonly used prior to fixed braces.
At the end of treatment, most patients benefit from an improvement in their profile as well as an improved relationship between the top and bottom teeth.
Fixed braces
These are the most common types of braces in use and are often referred to as “train tracks”. They consist of a series of wires which run through small metal squares bonded to the surface of each tooth, and allow accurate movement of both the crown and root of the teeth. The wires are held in place using tiny elastics which are available in an array of colours to help keep patients entertained!
Ceramic fixed braces
Ceramic braces are less noticeable than metal fixed braces as the squares bonded onto the teeth are made of a tooth-coloured ceramic material. They are a popular choice with both adults and children alike.
Self-ligating braces
These are innovative fixedbraces designed to reduce the amount of friction encountered by teeth during movement. This allows teeth to move more freely and, as a result, reduces discomfort and treatment time.

Invisalign
Invisalign is a system which utilises a series of clear removable aligners to correct tooth position. Each aligner is worn as much as possible for approximately 2 weeks, being removed for cleaning and eating. They are virtually invisible, as the name suggests, and are a fantastic alternative to fixed braces for both adults and teenagers. However, they cannot be used to treat all cases. Should you be interested, the orthodontist will discuss your suitability for Invisalign at your consultation.

Lingual braces
Lingual braces are fast becoming on of the most popular methods of achieving a beautiful smile. These are braces which are fixed to the inner surfaces of the teeth towards the tongue. They are completely invisible from the outside and can be used to treat even complex cases. Adults and children can benefit from this type of treatment provided most of the adult teeth are present and the teeth, gums and bones healthy. Some initial irritation of the tongue and speech impairment should be expected, but this settles down quickly.
